This week for People and Events of Now and Long Ago we focused on Hanukkah! We learned all about the holiday and the reason it is celebrated. We had so much fun talking about Hanukkah traditions and symbols. The kids' favorite was making our edible dreidels out of hershey kisses, marshmallows, and toothpicks! :)

We brainstormed and took a vote on naming our Kindness Elves and we decided on Max and Marie!
This week our acts of kindness were:
-Donating a book from our classroom library to the Nest library
-Sitting with a new friend at lunch!
-Making cards for the cafeteria staff to say thank you! **The kids and the staff LOVED this!
-Cleaning our classroom really well so the maintenance staff didn't have to that night!
-Picking up trash outside on our way to recess
Ask Your Child About:
-Writing: Narrative- Can you write the steps of making a dreidel using the word "then"?
-Content Time: Hanukkah! Why is Hannukah 8 days and nights? (The lamp was only supposed to burn one night, but it burned 8 nights) What is the name of the candle holder? (Menorah) What do you call potato pancakes? (Latkes)
-Phonics: Ending Sounds, CVC words, Vowels
-Reading: Main topic & key details- What was the main idea of Boris and Stella? Why do people celebrate Hanukkah?
-Math: 3d Shapes- Can you find a sphere/cylinder/cube/cone?

Completely random, but when I hear, "Ms. Ham, look! I made a sight word!" during snack and that sight word happens to be play, I can't help but smile. I love how much fun we have while learning!
My dad flew in from Oregon to be my date to the Daddy-Daughter Dance because I mentioned I was chaperoning and my elementary school never did those dances. He spent Friday as an official volunteer in our classroom and the kids loved showing him how we do things and how smart they are! My favorite part was when one of them called him out for not putting a book away! :) The dance was so much fun and I loved getting to dance the night away with the girls who attended!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love,
Ms. Ham
