This week was our first week of our new unit: Energy! We focused on sound this week and our learning goal was to be able to understand that sound is made from vibration.
We listened to natural sounds like waterfalls, birds chirping, thunderstorms, etc. and man-made sounds like car crashes, airplanes, chainsaws (SCARY!), horns, dirt bikes, etc. and then we wrote about our favorite of each type of sound. Later in the week we did a picture sort of natural vs. man-made sounds. On Wednesday, we made our own instruments out of toilet paper towel rolls, wax paper, and rubberbands.

When they put their hands on the wax paper, they could feel the vibration from the sound! It's safe to say, we've mastered this learning goal! :)
We also read "Substitue Groundhog" and our poem for the week was:
Groundhog, Groundhog
Sleepy and brown.
Please wake up and look around
If upon the ground, a shadow's cast then it will be
Six more weeks of cold for all.
No shadow is an early thaw!
This is such a strange concept for Florida kids, but we talked about how people up north want an early thaw because they're tired of all the snow and cold, but in Florida it doesn't really matter to us! In case you didn't hear... Groundhog Phil did not see his shadow!

They are doing so well circling the sight words in our fluency practice!
Ask Your Child About:
Writing: Informative writing- Name a natural/man-made sound and write about the sound it makes.
Content Connection: Energy- Sound is made when something does what? (vibrates!) Ask them to show you how to feel their voice vibrate (they put their hand on their throat and make noise).
Phonics: Digraphs (Th, Sh, Wh, Ch), CVC words
Phonemic Awareness: Sound deletion & sound manipulation
Reading: Unknown Words and Main topic & key details- Who was playing the guitar at the concert in "A Loud Concert?" (Sam's brother)
Math: Addition and subtraction within 5, solving addition and subtraction with both addends unknown (decomposing). We took our unit 5 assessment and they ROCKED it! SO proud of them. Please continue to practice mixed facts at home so they remember to look at the sign!
A Few Reminders:
-Valentine's Day will be celebrated with a card exchange on Friday, February 12th. Please remember that your child must have a valentine for EVERY student in our classroom!!! Also, please do not send them in before Wednesday.
-If you did not send in February snack, please do so! We had a lot donated on Friday (thank you!), but everyone needs to donate in order for it to be fair.
-Class picture day is Friday, February 19th. If you would like to purchase a picture, they are $12! :)
Hope you had a wonderful weekend! GO BRONCOS!!!
With SO much love,
Ms. Ham
