Earth, Moon, & Sun

This week started off a little out of our normal schedule: we did math in the morning on Monday and Tuesday because our assistant principal came to watch us do math on Wednesday morning! The kids did such a great job adding within 10 and I was so proud of them. I know that they know why we do things, our learning goal, and expectations, but it is SO nice when they can explain to a visitor all of these things!

It was our last week of Earth, Moon, & Sun and we got to do some really fun, hands-on things! We started the week with learning about the phases of the moon and making the different phases with the center of oreos...

Another day, we went outside to enjoy the beautiful weather and make craters "on the moon!" We all got to drop different size balls into "moon" (flour) and show the crater it created! We discussed how there isn't any wind on the moon so footprints stay forever, unlike in Florida!

We finished off the week with creating marshmallow constellations....

They take after their teacher and everything has to do with food all of the time! :)

We also made space books that they took home and I hope they read them to you! They loved making these and reading each page as we moved on.

It was a really fun week and I was very proud of them!

Ask Your Child About:

-Writing: Narrative writing- Write about events that occur and provide a reaction. How did we make craters?

-Content Connection: Earth in Space and Time- Why do footprints stay on the moon? Is the sun a planet or a star? Why do we have day and night?

-Phonics: We are focusing on letter combinations (ay, ai, ey- See kids play. ur, ir, er- see the church. ar, ar- drive the car. ow, ow- one brown cow.) and we learn two lines to our letter combinations poem each day. We also focused on blends: "br" and "cr" and made circle maps of words that begin with each blend:

-Reading: Identify characters, setting, and major events. What were the events in "I took the Moon for a Walk?" & matching pictures to text (they're pro's at this!)

-Math: Addition within 10- How do you play the game capture? What can we do if we don't know the answer to an addition problem? (count them, draw pictures)

If your child did not return his/her "book in a bag," please do so Monday! We have early dismissal on Friday 3/18!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
