Hi! This week we continued on our needs, wants, & money unit with the second week of jobs that people do & the tools they need in order to do their job (community helpers). This week we focused on: teachers, garbage collectors, bus drivers, & other miscellaneous careers. On Friday, we wrote about what we want to be when we grow up and created replicas of ourselves dressed for our future careers. They turned out so great and some of them were so creative! :)

"I want to be a firefighter because I want to climb ladders."

"I want to be a teacher because I remember my teacher and I love my teacher." <3

"I want to be a police to catch bad guys catch in the car in jail."

With our little 3d bus replicas we created! :)
Chick Update: We continue looking at pictures of what's going on inside our little eggs and reading about the growth of our baby chicks! The kids come in and count down how many days until they arrive first thing every morning. They're going to make some great "Momma Hens!"
The other big news is that we finished our Florida Reading Association Children's Book Award books and voted on our favorite!
The books we read were:
"The Grudge Keeper" by: Mara Rockliff
"Tiny Rabbit's Big Wish" by: Margarita Engle
"Two Little Birds" by: Mary Newell DePalma
"The Loch MESS Monster" by: Helen Lester (My personal favorite!)
"Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond Between a Soldier and His Service Dog" by: Luis Carlos Montalvan
"Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla" by: Katherine Applegate
"A Boy and A Jaguar" by: Alan Rabinowitz
"Sea Slime- It's Eeuwwy, Gooey, and Under The Sea" by: Ellen Prager
I tallied up our votes and the winner from our class was: SEA SLIME! This made my teacher heart really happy for 2 reasons: 1. it's NON-FICTION! and 2. our next theme within our living things unit is ocean animals, so I know that they will be so engaged!
Ask Your Child About:
-Writing: Narrative Writing- Can you write a story about a garbage collector?
-Content Connection: Jobs that people do & the tools they need- What tools does a bus driver need? (a bus, a license) What do you want to be when you grow up?
-Phonics: blends ("fl", "pl", & "bl") and letter combinations: "or", "ou" as in mouse, and "all" We finished our letter combinations poem and the kids are doing so well finding the combinations and chunking words when decoding!
-Reading: identify the characters, setting, and major events; describe the relationship between illustrations and the text- What was the setting in "The Teacher from the Black Lagoon?"
-Math: Adding and subtracting within 10- we had a review week of adding and subtracting within 10, finding the missing addend, and decomposing! We took our assessment Thursday and Friday and they did so well and I am SO proud!
Reminders:
-Field trip forms and money are due by FRIDAY! (If you are unable to pay for the field trip, please contact me privately!)
-Please make sure your child is returning his/her "Book In A Bag" each Friday so that I can send a new book home! Fluency is built by practicing! :)
I hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love,
Ms. Ham
