This week was our final week of community helpers as part of our civics unit! This week, we read and learned about: school bus drivers, sanitation workers/garbage truck drivers, zoo keepers, and librarians. On Friday, we wrote about what we want to be when we grow up!

Their phonetic spelling & illustrations have already improved so much from the beginning of the year! Thanks to my volunteer who put the board together! :)

On Friday, we also had a guest speaker (& mom!) talk to us about her job taking care of premature babies! She brought all of the tools she uses for her job & the kids loved getting to look at and try everything out. One of our friends shared that he was born early and he showed the class pictures of him as a tiny baby in the NICU! We were then able to talk about germs and how babies can't fight germs as well as we can so it reinforced our Scholastic Reader for this week too! :)

It was so great to see so many of you at the Run4Funds on Wednesday! Pledges are due on Wednesday 9/21! Thanks for supporting our school.

Ask Your Child About:

-PBIS: What feeling is the best and why? We read this book and talked about communicating our feelings!

-Phonics/Phonemic Awareness: Our letters for this week were a & g. What do we say for a? (a, apple, /a/) What do we say for g? (g, game, /g/) What motions do we do for a and g? (alligator and gulping!)

-Reading: What does the author do? (writes the words) What does the illustrator do? (draws the pictures) What does the title tell us? (the name of the book & what it's going to be about) Our favorite book this week was:

-Math: How can you figure out which number is missing in the number line? (Either start at 0 and count to the missing number, or look at the number before the missing number!) We took our first unit assessment on numbers 0-10 and the kids did so well! Please continue to work on handwriting for the numbers (2s and 5s mainly)!

-Social Studies: Community Helpers! Which jobs sound the most fun to you? What do you want to be when you grow up?

-Writing: What needs to go in between words? (finger spaces) Which sound do you need to have when you're writing or labeling? (at least the first sound!)

-Fluency/Poems: "Animal Crackers" Poem, "Little Things" Poem, "Stay Healthy at School" Scholastic Reader

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
