Fall Leaves & Pumpkins

October is such a fun month in kindergarten, so we were bummed that it was only a 4 day week and that we miss a whole week due to Fall Break! We jam-packed fall leaves and pumpkins into our 4 days and read a lot of really great pumpkin literature.

Their writing is really taking off, so I hope you're practicing those sentences over fall break!

"I like to cook pumpkins."

"I like to see girl pumpkins."

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonemic Awareness: Syllables- Can you clap the syllables in pumpkin? (pump-kin) leaf? (leaf) They do this easily other than the 1 syllable tricky guys.

-Phonics: What do we say for p? (p, pan, /p/) What do we say for j? (j, jug, /j/)

-Reading Comprehension: identifying characters- What is a character? Do characters have to be people? (No, some of the characters in our books this week were pumpkins and seeds!)

-Fluency/Poems: "Pumpkin, Pumpkin" "Five Little Pumpkins" "I Picked A Pumpkin" & Scholastic Readers: "Is Autumn Here?" and "Rotten Science"

-Math: Tricky Teens- What number always comes first in a teen number? (1) How do you play teen tangle? Can you put the teen numbers in order as fast as you can? (They LOVE being timed!)

We also revisited patterns this week and made pumpkin and black cat pattern hats...

-Physical Science: Properties of Matter- What are some words you can use to describe properties of pumpkins?

-Writing: We have new writing groups and goals! What is your new writing goal? Can you write a sentence about pumpkins?

-Sight Words: a, you, to

**We have learned all of Q1 sight words! Please, please, please continue to practice these words!

Reminders:

-"Suggested" Homework went home on Thursday! This included the book they read all week in small reading groups, so they should be able to point to the words and read it to you. Fluency is built by reading again and again, so please read it as often as possible and then make sure it comes back to school in the plastic bag on Monday! :) Your child will not receive a new book until the old one returns...thanks for understanding!

-Our Halloween party is on Monday 10/31 in the afternoon (time still TBD) and your child may dress up in a school appropriate costume (no masks, weapons, etc.). Please keep an eye out for information going home about the party SOON!

Have a wonderful fall break & give your little one extra love for me!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
