Bats

We had a really fun week learning about bats and motion! We started the week with "Stellaluna" (a classic!) and then moved on to non-fiction texts about facts looking for answers to our questions in our KWL chart! We learned answers to how bats see in the dark, how they fly, how they turn into vampires (they don't!), and how they hang upside down! The kids are really picking up on reading for a purpose and realizing that good readers go back and re-read things to find information!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonics: What do we say for v? (v, van, /v/) w? (w, wind, /w/)

-Phonemic Awareness: See rhyming homework questions :) , What is the ENDING sound in hat? fun? rag? bus?

-Reading: What are the boxes by pictures with sentences in them called? (captions) Can you retell the events in "Stellaluna?"

-Math: Can you show me how to add dominoes?

-Science/Motion: Why do magnets work? (They push and pull)

-Writing: How do you plan before you write? Can you show me how to highlight finger spaces?

Important Notes:

-I have completed Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA) for all of our kiddos with the help of a wonderful parent! If you haven't received a letter explaining DRA and your child's CURRENT reading level, you will get one this week! Please always, always, always have your child do a picture walk & talk before reading a book in their level. It helps them warm up to vocabulary that may be in the book and greatly improves accuracy!

-ESGI printouts went home in homework folders on Friday! Please look at your child's data carefully and practice the letters, sounds, sight words, and phonemic awareness skills they may not have mastered yet! Thanks for your support at home!

-We have learning commons again on Monday! Please return library books to check out a new one.

-Our Halloween Party is 2:30-3:30 on Monday! Hope to see a lot of you tomorrow :)

Hope you had a wonderful Weekend!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
