Motion: Transportation

Sorry for the lapse in a weekly update; I was in North Carolina for a race and by the time I realized I hadn't posted an update it was halfway through the week!

This week we had our final week of motion and focused on transportation. The kids are experts at identifying the force that makes an object move and we had a lot of fun learning about cars, buses, monster trucks, planes, blimps, trains, and boats!

We even got a little crazy and PAINTED some trains in our room to write about them!

I meant to take a picture of it, but the kids had been asking when I was going to add pictures of them to my digital picture frame in the library. They really enjoy watching the pictures of my "old" kids and the activities they did... They're such sweethearts and want to know who each of my old kids are and something about them! But when I showed them that I added 50+ pictures of them to the frame, they all stood around and watched until announcements came on that morning!

Schedule Update: We decided as a class to move science/social studies to right after lunch rather than after specials because we rarely had enough time to finish all of our writing groups so I kept skipping sci/ss and the kids were not happy about that! We came up with the solution that after lunch/before math would give us enough time for all of our subjects! It's worked beautifully and the kids are happy about it!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonics: Zz, Qq- What do we say for z? (z, zebra, /z/) What do we say for q? (q, queen, /qu/)

***We have learned all 26 letters now! We should have 100% mastery on letter sounds by the end of next week I'm hoping!

-Phonological awareness: What is the middle sound in hot? fun? rat? box? get?

-Reading: Retelling the story- What are the details you need to have in order to retell a story? (characters, setting, major events- beginning, middle, end)

-Science: Motion- How does a train move? What are some examples of push/pull? (think back to the pocket chart sort)

-Math: Place Value- How many cubes are in a rod? (10) Do you have to count each cube in a rod? (No, count by 10s) If we count out 18 cubes and then mix them up, how many cubes do we have? (18- the number doesn't change if we move them around!) What if we add one more cube, how many do we have without counting? (19- order succession)

-Writing: Which subject was your favorite to write about this week: boats, trains, trucks, or buses? What color do we highlight our periods? (pink) finger spaces? (yellow)

FYI: Please always do a picture walk & talk prior to having your child read a decodable book, but especially with this week's reading group book! With the sub Monday and no school Tuesday, we did not have nearly as much quality time in reading groups.

Lastly, thank you SO much to our room moms for organizing the best holiday party I've ever had in my career! :) One of our little guys even told me, "Trick-or-Treating was fun, but I liked our party better!" Thank you to everyone who donated something and/or attended as well! I am so lucky to have such incredible parents! Here are some pictures I took during the party:

I think this one sums up my feelings about Halloween on a Monday! ha! <3

I hope your weekend has been fun & relaxing!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
