Gingerbread Week

We had so much fun comparing and contrasting all of the different Gingerbread versions: The original "Gingerbread Man," 2 retellings of the original that were slightly different, "Gingerbread Man Loose in the School," "Gingerbread Bear," "Gingerbread Mouse," "Gingerbread Pirates," "Ninjabread Man," "Keep Running, Gingerbread Man!," "Gingerbread Kid Goes to School!" and many others!

This unit is the one where kids finally have a great grasp on that comparing and contrasting adventures of characters in familiar stories standards and they are able to apply it to future books and even past books that we've read!

We had super fun centers that focused on sequencing, labeling, building felt gingerbread men and writing about them, gingerbread playdoh, and gingerbread CVC words.

We made cinnamon ornaments that hopefully made it home to you in one piece! :) Thank you to amazing volunteers who helped me with this... there's no way I can do reading groups and fun extras without them!

Be sure to check out our article in the news blast when it comes out about our hunt for clues to retell "Gingerbread Man Loose in the School!" We even graphed our first bites once we found him!

When a gingerbread injury turns into a connection to the pirate version... HE requested the peg leg, so obviously we had to make it work! :)

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonics: O, P, Q, R, S, T ; the "it" family- What are some words in the it family?

-Reading: Comparing and contrasting experiences of characters in familiar stories- Which gingerbread version was your favorite? Why? How is it different from the original?

-Math: Adding and subtracting within 10- How do you know when to add or when to subtract? (the sign! Parents PLEASE help me with this... they get rolling on one and don't look at the sign!)

-Social Studies: Holidays around the world- Which country did Gingerbread men come from? (Germany) What made them popular? (Hansel & Gretel)

-Writing: We took our assessment on hats- How did it go? What did you do your plan and write about your hat?

Reminders:

-Holiday Party: Thursday 12/15 from 2:30-3:15... Please make sure to send in the item you signed up for on signup genius! Thanks for your support! Your kiddo may wear pajamas on this day.

-Homework: I made not one, but two mistakes on the homework this week! Can you tell I was a bit rushed? The homework is due: THURSDAY 12/15. If your child had the addition and subtraction page that goes to 5, I copied the same one on the front and back... please only do it once! :)

-Sight Words: PLEASE be revisiting those sight words! I'm noticing some of our friends are forgetting their color words when reading to me!

Happy Almost Break!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
