We had a super fun week focused on the classic: "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" by: Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle. Yes, I know they've ALL read this before... but they love it and we took it so much further than they do in preschool! We identified characters and sequenced the characters in the original:

Then we made our first class book: "Kindergarten, Kindergarten, What Do You See?"

Each kiddo has their own page (& it was good name writing practice with only the first letter being capital!) and they LOVE this... they think it's hilarious and they can read the whole thing because of the pattern & their friends' names. Also: I, you, see, at, me are all 1st quarter sight words- any time you can trick them into practicing them is a win! :)
Then we moved on to a new standard: comparing and contrasting (similarities and differences) by reading "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?" "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See?" and "Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?" They loved finding things that were the same and different and this really made them start to make connections when reading!
Because the animals all have a color word before them, our poem was:

On Friday, we had so much fun with the Fun Run, silly sock day, & eating lunch in the classroom! Thank you for all your support through that.

Ask Your Child About:
-Phonemic Awareness/Phonological Awareness: Beginning sounds, Tapping out CVC words
-Phonics: Cc (c, cat, /c/) Oo (o, octopus, /o/)
-Reading: Identifying characters, making connections, similarities and differences (what does a double bubble map show us?)
-Math: We focused hard on missing numbers and ten frames this week

-Writing: We labeled the characters from Brown Bear and some groups wrote sentences (I see a yellow duck.) We also started interactive writing where I wrote "I see a" over and over on chart paper and the kids got to come up and stretch their sounds to write what they see and then their name. (SW practice again & phonics/writing) Then we read each sentence all together adding each one as we went (fluency practice).
-Social Studies: Community/Zones of Regulation/September PBIS- We read the book, "When Sophie Gets Angry, REALLY REALLY Angry," and talked about how she calmed herself down from the red zone back to the green zone. Then we had a community circle about what we do to get back to the green zone.
We're moving on to our first science unit next week & I'm so proud of how far they've come already! Look for yet another email from me this evening for homework tips/helping your child at home!
Have a great rest of your weekend!
With SO much love,
Ms. Ham
