Get ready for picture overload... this week was too much fun! We loved learning about the properties of matter: solids, liquids, & gases and sorting objects based on their properties. We used our 5 senses to really work on adjectives (describing words) by making a flip chart to describe our apples each day.

We read so many fun apple books, both fiction and nonfiction, about apples and Johnny Appleseed. During math, we read "Ten Apples Up On Top" by: Dr. Seuss and made ourselves with 10 apples on our heads!

Thursday was a super fun day because we did our taste test of red, yellow, & green apples...

How precious is this?! Sour face!!

We graphed our class results...

We made bubble maps using our adjectives...

and then made paper-tear apples and wrote sentences to describe our apples!

These all brought us to making apple sauce on Friday...

The kids have a little special something up our sleeves for you next week... waiting is hard, but you can do it! :) Ha!
Ask Your Child About:
-Phonemic Awareness: SYLLABLES! Yikes... we are struggling with syllables... they want to isolate the beginning sound first and then clap the remainder of the word... we've gone back to putting our hand under our chin and counting how many times our jaw drops.
-Phonics: Ee (e, Ed, /e/) Rr (r, rat, /r/)
-Math: Positional words- play Simon Says with words like: above, below, next to, beside, under, over, etc.
-Reading: Retelling the story- What happened in the beginning/middle/end?
-Science: Properties of matter- what are the 3 different kids of matter? (solid, liquid, gas) What are our 5 senses? (sight, touch, smell, hearing, taste)
-Writing: Writing 1 sentence using finger spaces. The kids highlight their own lines, we write together, then we check for: capital letter at the beginning, the rest lowercase letters, period at the end, and finger spaces. We know that good writers go back and read their sentences to see if it makes sense or if we forgot words!
***PENCIL GRIP!: I have been drilling pencil grip! We teach them to "pinch the pencil with their pointer and their thumb and then rest it on the shelf (3 other fingers below)" - please, please, please constantly check and correct your child's pencil grip! It is far enough in the year now that it isn't discouraging to them.
Reminders:
-Conferences are Tuesday and Thursday night next week! Please check your sign up! I look forward to this time to love on your kiddo.
-Fall Break is October 9-13th!
-Scholastic Magazine money is due Friday, October 6th!
Have a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love,
Ms. Ham
