We had another fun week exploring apples... We really focused on being scientists and the scientific process to observe, predict, hypothesize, and evaluate our predictions. We did an experiment where we smelled oranges, but tasted apples (5 senses).

Spoiler: The apple will taste like oranges! Our noses trick our brains!
We also did a rotten experiment comparing apples with the skin on, apples sliced with the skin, apples peeled, and apples diced to see which one rots the fastest! I'll save you from the pictures of that nastiness!
We labeled the parts of an apple using our sounds:

We measured our apple by standard and nonstandard units and weighed it using a balance scale:

Our poem was:

And these went home on Thursday:

**Disclaimer: Yes, the pot was sanitized! I also had the kids put coffee filters in the pot before they put in on their head so we weren't sharing any hair/head germs! Believe me, safety and sanitation is a BIG deal to me! ;)
Ask Your Child About:
-Phonics: P, J (p, pan, /p/) (j, jug, /j/)
*We focused hard on b/d reversals this week- google "bat then a ball, donut then a door" for a visual of how we're remembering which is which! :)
-Phonemic Awareness: SYLLABLES! We're getting there... keep practicing!
-Reading: Retelling the events, Sequencing
-Math: Teen Numbers- watch THIS video to see how we're remembering how to write them!
-Science: Properties of matter, changes of matter- the kids have made some great connections and observations about how the properties of matter change!
-Writing: writing 1 complete sentence with a capital at the beginning, fingerspaces, and a period at the end.
Reminders:
-Scholastic Magazine money was due today! Please send in $6 ASAP if you haven't yet! -Fall break starts today! See you on the 16th!
FYI:
-We are now doing differentiated centers based on your child's group! Ask them what their goal is during literacy centers and how they know which folder to pick from! :) It went so well and I'm loving the extra specific work for the kids.
-We will start PDL groups after fall break! Keep your eyes out for a letter going home soon!
-We will be having a fall carnival on October 20th from 5:30-7:30! The kids will be able to wear costumes to it, so heads up! I will also be asking for donations of crazy colored hair spray because that's what our classroom will be doing for it. All money earned from the ticket sales goes directly to our classroom to spend on what WE need... so please support us in this event!
I feel like we've been asking for a lot lately and I'm so sorry! It always seems to come and go in waves... I promise I won't ask for anything again for a while! :)
Have a wonderful break! Read & practice those sight words!
With SO Much Love,
Ms. Ham
