Matter: Pumpkins

Oh my goodness... this week was absolutely one of those weeks where I had so many moments that I thought, "This is why I teach!" It feels like we are in such a sweet spot right now with behavior AND academics. They are picking things up like crazy and I am so very proud of them. If you haven't gotten to be a fly on our walls yet, I would love for you to come see just how much they've grown already! :)

We continued learning about matter and the properties of matter through pumpkin investigations...

We estimated how big around our pumpkin was and then measured with string...

We learned about the balance scale and weighed our tiny pumpkins...

We predicted if our big pumpkins would sink or float...

One of our friends brought in this book for us to read... and I had that poem planned for next week, but switched it to this week for him because he was so excited! I LOVE when they find things at home that connects to what we're learning at school and bring them in... I will almost always squeeze it in to our day!

We described pumpkins using adjectives and made a bubble map and wrote a sentence from it...

We did some pumpkin STEM (science, technology, engineering, & math) tasks with Ms. Ott in the library & MakerSpace...

and we read the book, "Spookley the Square Pumpkin" and made our very own Spookleys to write about...

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonemic Awareness: ending sounds, middle sounds, blending/segmenting CVC words

-Phonics: Hh (h, hat, /h/), Ll (l, lamp, /l/), Kk (k, kite, /k/)

-PDL: Who is your PDL teacher? What have you been working on?

-Math: Teen numbers, measurement - what do teen numbers start with?

-Reading: What is the problem in a book? What is the solution?

-Science: Properties of matter- What are the characteristics of pumpkins? What describing words/adjectives can you think of about pumpkins?

-Writing: How do you stretch the sounds in a word?

Thank you so much for all of your support during this crazy month... from apples to pumpkins to hairspray to the fall carnival, I truly appreciate you!

Please sign up for something for our Halloween party if you're not completely annoyed by me yet! Thank you so much to our wonderful room mom for planning our party for us! Our party is on Halloween 10/31 from 2:30-3:30 and parents are welcome! :)

Have a wonderful weekend!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
