The Past: Pilgrims & Native Americans

We have moved on from matter to history standards: the past! To learn about the past and compare it to now, we are focusing on Thanksgiving: the Pilgrims & the Native Americans! They made these turkey hats in art & will be wearing them on Wednesday for our Thanksgiving feast!

Our poem this week reinforced counting by 5s!

Our centers were feast/food related! They made "sight words sandwiches," wrote menus with play food, put together environmental print puzzles (cereal boxes, brownie boxes, etc.)...

We worked on those fine motor skills & building handwriting muscles by doing Thanksgiving push pin art. (If you want a solid break of peace and quiet at home, I highly recommend these... the kids were SO focused and quiet!)

They built sight word pattern block turkeys...

(Sight Word Sandwiches)

We've started "Pilgrim Traveler Trunks" and we've been saving all of our work on the past in our trunks to take home at the end of the unit!

FYI:

-This was a huge assessment week for us because we've learned all of our letters & sounds. I re-assessed ALL of the phonemic awareness skills, phonics skills, & gave the Developmental Reading Assessment to every single kid.

-Because of this, I had them throw away their old book bags and they will be receiving new ones going into Thanksgiving break. In their homework folders you will find a letter explaining what reading level they are at (reminder: we do not emphasize reading levels and they have no idea what exactly it means other than "they rocked it" and they're trying to move up on their charts! This is in no way a negative thing and please revisit the letter home about baby shoes and dad shoes if you have any concerns!). I will also have all of their new ESGI printouts in their homework folder. PLEASE review these items as this is basically a conference that you don't need to come in for! This is the point in the year that I can really tell who is practicing at home and who isn't! Please help your child succeed! :)

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonemic Awareness: Middle Sounds

-Phonics: Yy, Ququ, Zz

-Phonics: Decoding & encoding CVC words (look up on youtube!)

-Writing: We've introduced tree maps to start writing more than 1 sentence! Example: Turkeys are, have, can

-Social Studies: How are Pilgrims and Native Americans different? How are they the same?

-Math: addition within 10! We've been using many different strategies...which one do you like the best?

-Reading: Retelling the events in a story & sequencing

-Veteran's Day: What song did you sing at the assembly? What is a Veteran?

Upcoming Events:

-Wednesday 11/15: Thanksgiving Feast @ 12:00 in the cafeteria! Please purchase a ticket in advance for $4 if you'd like to join us! No cash or check is preferred! :) Please remember to bring your ID as we will be checking them! -Wednesday 11/15: Turkey Colors Day (Cub club has made it a spirit day- please have your child wear turkey colors: brown, yellow, red, orange)

-Thanksgiving Break: Monday 11/20-Friday 11/25
