We had such a fun week comparing and contrasting the fairy tale: "The Three Little Pigs" and different versions of them! There are some really fun twists like "The three Little Wolves and The Big Bad Pig." The kids read the last two with the substitute on Friday, so I can't be certain of the class favorite, but on Thursday it was definitely "The Three Little Fish and The Big Bad Shark!"

This particular version was a great introduction to point of view and character traits! It is Alexander Wolfe's version of the story (or Al for short) and he claims that he just had a cold and sneezed the houses down while asking for some sugar for his dear old granny's birthday cake! We had fun graphing whether or not we believed his story!
We also did a STEM challenge to build a house strong enough to withstand the wolf...

We created plans for our houses because the first little pigs did not create plans and their houses weren't strong enough!

Then we built our houses with marshmallows and toothpicks... and took turns huffing and puffing as the Big Bad Wolf! I'm happy to say that the kids were great engineers and almost all of them survived!

On Tuesday, we had so much fun celebrating being 100 days smarter!

Same kid, same. ;)

Our stuffed animals had so much fun at the sleepover in the library! Be sure to check out Mountain View's Facebook Page to see pictures of the mischief they got into while we weren't around! ;)
This event is truly the beauty of a primary school... I am so proud to work at Mountain View all the time, but I shared this on my own page because I loved it so much! <3
Next week, we move on to Goldilocks and the Three Bears! :)
Ask Your Child About:
-Phonics: silent e & long vowels
-Reading: identifying characters, setting, & major events; comparing & contrasting adventures of characters in familiar stories
-Math: finished up 3d shapes & positional words- tests went home on Thursday! Please check your child's folder to see how he/she did and practice any that were missed!
-Writing: We've switched to narrative writing to go along with fairy tales. We've been writing stories that begin with "Once upon a time" and tell events in sequential order!
-STEM: We made snowstorms in a jar with Mrs. Tucker on Monday!
-Science: STEM investigation of motion & forces - 3 little pigs houses!
Links:
-Math Apps for iPads or computers- go to resources -> math apps (there are geoboards, tangrams, ten frames, etc!) The kids ASKED for me to send this home :)
-Sight Words: Here are some great ideas if your child needs a change for practicing!
Reminders:
-Valentine boxes were due Friday! Please make sure your child has a box/bag at school and will have a Valentine for every student in our classroom!
-Our Valentine party is Wednesday from 2:30-3:30 and families are welcome! :)
-No school Friday 2/16 (professional development day) or Monday 2/19 (President's Day)
-Jump Rope for Heart is due March 16th
I'm going to attempt to have their Valentine gifts for you ready to send home on Tuesday! I'm so not a pinterest teacher and I actually can't stand when teachers describe activities or lessons as "cute" because cute is never a goal of mine/ours- we do hard things & take risks & fail & learn.... but every once in a while I have to remember that they're 5 & 6 (and if we're being honest, they're pretty darn cute) and that you give them to me for 7.5 hours a day, so we can do a cute thing here or there for you in return! ;) I hope you love them and I hope you know that they LOVED everything having to do with them (the books, the writing, making them, etc!).
Have a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love,
Ms. Ham
