Maps & Globes

We spent the week hitting our geography standards by studying maps & globes! I introduced them to Google Earth on Tuesday and they were obsessed! :) Speaking of which, this was a perfect unit to ask who knows their address and phone number! We talked about how if there is an emergency at home and they have to call 911, they will need to know their address! :) We're about life skills in room 17!

We started the week off by reading, "I Need My Own Country!" and asking and answering questions about unknown words. It was also an introduction to our writing unit this week: creating our own countries!

We decided where our country would be located, created a flag, designed clothes, designed money, and then wrote our country's rules!

In social studies, we studied: the cardinal directions, elements of maps and globes, and landforms. We had our own landform passports and went to 4 destinations: the forest, the plains, the mountains, and the ocean. We wrote about our favorite place we visited and why!

We also did a little unplanned learning during snack after reading, "There's a Map on My Lap!" by peeling an orange to see what a globe would look like flat! This was great 2d vs. 3d shape review too. It is beautiful when these things work out like that! Ha!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonics: Silent e, long vowels

**I re-assessed all kiddos (who were present) on decoding & decoding with digraphs and that info. will go home next week!

-Reading: Unknown words, 5 finger retell

-Math: Missing Addend to 10

-Social Studies: Geography- Maps & Globes

-Writing: Descriptive writing to describe elements of our countries we created

-Technology: Typing

Reminders:

-Dr. Seuss week starts Monday 2/26 with crazy sock day & our sock hop!

-If you signed up for something for Dr. Seuss week, please send it in Monday! :) Thanks in advance!

-Conference signup went out on Friday! Check your email & sign up for a spot please :)

-Water bottles need to come to school each day please! I know it sounds silly, but having a bunch of kids lined up at the drinking fountain wastes a lot of our time! :)

Volunteers:

If you're a cleared volunteer, are you available these dates/times? :)

-Tuesday 2/27 11:05-12 to help cook green eggs & ham (I'm all about multi-tasking, but cooking and managing 25 tiny people scares me a bit!)

-Thursday 3/1 2:15-3:15 to help make oobleck (must be okay with messes!)

I hope you had a wonderful weekend!

With SO Much Love,

Ms. Ham
