Dr. Seuss Week

Oh my goodness- this week is always one of my favorites of the year! This is the week that they realize they can read "real" books and I just love seeing how excited they are about reading!

The kids had a pretty good report from the substitute on Monday! They read "Fox in Socks" and had a sock hop in their silly socks!

On Tuesday, we focused on "Green Eggs and Ham."

We predicted whether we would like them, tasted them, and then wrote our opinion about them! We also graphed our class data on how many friends liked them vs. didn't like them! This is definitely the pickiest group of eaters I've ever had in my career! ha! We had 13 yes and 10 no, but those faces above sure liked them!

On Wednesday, we focused on "Cat in The Hat" and "Cat in the Hat Comes Back." We made rhyming cats, sequenced the events in the story, and wrote about whether or not we'd like the cat to visit us!

On Thursday, we read "Bartholomew and the Oobleck" and made our own oobleck with the help of a wonderful parent volunteer who had to embrace a LOT of crazy and messy! :) Thank you!

On Friday, we celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday with a birthday party! We read so many other Dr. Seuss books throughout the week, so we made a balloon with our favorite(s)! We had a special snack for him and then watched a Dr. Seuss short movie!

[A few of my favorite THINGS!]

We also "who'd" ourselves and started writing to describe our Whos! We have to finish them up next week! :)

We had such a wonderful week full of celebrating reading!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonics: Vowel combinations

-Reading: Using strategies to figure out silly Dr. Seuss words!

-Math: Missing Addend to 10

-Writing: Opinion writing & descriptive writing. We also read "Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters from Obedience School" and wrote letters using that as a mentor text!

-Technology: The Cat in the Hat games

FYI:

-This week will be a big assessment week so I can prepare for conferences: DRA2, sight words, phonemic awareness, phonics, math, & writing! The kids actually love to be tested by me, but please make sure your child is at school and ready! I can't wait to share your child's success with you!

-Next week is Wish Week for Ponderosa- please see info. in the blast sent on Friday!

-The Inaugural Graduation Gallop 5k is May 12th and registration is now live! Please see Mountain View's webpage to register if you'd like!

I hope you had a wonderful weekend in the gorgeous weather!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
