And chances are... (If You Give a -)

We revisited some social studies standards this week in preparation to learn about money after spring break. We did a Laura Numeroff author study with all of the "If You Give A...." books focusing on needs and wants.

These books were a great introduction to cause & effect (which isn't a kindergarten standard, but these stinkers are so ready!)

We informally compared the books by completing this chart focusing on characters, initial event, setting, & the biggest mess!

You can't do wants & needs without "shopping" in magazines! :)

The lightbulbs went off with decomposing numbers this week! We did a lot of really fun activities that were hands-on to solidify the process of breaking apart a number into 2 smaller numbers:

On Friday, we got to test out Google Expeditions with an Augmented Reality app!

When they scanned the QR codes around the room, dinosaurs and fish came to life in 3d form! It was really cool and they were so excited. I got so many "thank you's" from them, which was so sweet but I can take no credit for this one! ha!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonics: Long vowels vs. short vowels

-Phonemic Awareness: sound manipulation

-Reading: Identifying characters, setting, and major events

-Math: Decomposing numbers (1-10) ... or teen numbers if needing a challenge!

-Social Studies: Economics- wants and needs! What items in the books were wants/needs?

-Writing: Sentence mechanics- capitalization, punctuation, spacing, etc. As we get more creative with our writing, we tend to get excited and forget all of these major parts of writing sentences!

Important Information:

-Conferences: Monday night 3/12 and Wednesday night 3/14

-Graduation Gallop 5k: register here if you're interested!

-I am finished DRAing all of the kids and I am so stinkin' proud of them! The end of kindergarten goal is to be reading at or above a DRA 4 and 92% of our class is reading at a DRA 3 or above right now! It's a big jump from a 3 to a 4, so keep up the great work at home!

-With new DRA levels, I am holding off on sending book bags home until Friday for Spring Break! :) Thanks for understanding!

-If your munchkin asked to borrow a Dr. Seuss book to read to you at home, please make sure it comes back to school on Monday! I LOVE that they can't get enough of them, but I also want to make sure they get returned because #teachersalary! :) Thanks so much!

I hope you enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend and I can't wait to meet with you next week to discuss our kiddos!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham
